Warm weather for the weekend

Following the snow of last week, we had high pressure move-in for the weekend with light winds and lots of sunshine. With the light winds, we had some freezing frost in the morning which brought some travel concerns due to visibility down to one mile or less at times.

CentraCare Dental Clinic to provide free dental care to children in need

CentraCare Dental Clinic at Rice Memorial Hospital is joining with dental professionals across the country for the American Dental Association's (ADA) 21st Annual “Give Kids a Smile” day. This oneday event takes place on Friday, February 3rd and provides free dental services to children whose families face barriers to dental care. Services include free oral screen- ings, cleanings, fluoride varnishes, sealants, oral hygiene instruction, and family dental education.

YMSWCD works on new outreach initiative in 2023

The Yellow Medicine Soil & Water Conservation District is gearing up for the year ahead with a new initiative, planning visits to ag retailer ovc es and ag-related businesses throughout Yellow Medicine County. “Some SWCDs around the state have put stau in the ag retailer ovces to make the connection to conservation options,” explains YMSWCD Director Tyler Knutson. “Many retailers appreciate this because it gives them one more resource to their customers.”

Microenterprise Loan Program receives recognition in “Overcoming Adversity”

HUTCHINSON, Minn.—Southwest Initiative Foundation’s (SWIF) Microenterprise Loan Program, in partnership with the redstar marketing un/ academy, recently received recognition for their work helping small businesses in rural Minnesota overcome adversity. In November, The Mid-America Economic Development Council presented its annual Economic Development awards at the 2021 Mid-America Competitiveness Conference in Chicago. This awards competition recognizes and stimulates the creative use of quality marketing and programs by economic development organizations throughout the council’s 13-state region.

Real reindeer visit the Volstead House

Braving the cold weather on Sunday, 334 people (comprised of 168 kids and 166 adults) made their way through the Andrew and Nellie Volstead House Museum to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus inside before heading outside to take a seat in Santa’s sleigh and meet his real, live reindeer. This year’s event included an additional time set aside at the end of the day as a quiet time for families with adults and kids with disabilities or sensory sensitivities. As always, this event was free to the public.
