Lakeview students enjoy visit with puppies
Last week, Lakeview Elementary students were treated to the opportunity to meet mini Schnauzer puppies. The Truwe family brought seven of the mini breed puppies in to visit a few of the elementary classrooms in the school last Wednesday. These photographs are from Mrs. Prokop’s classroom.

Last Tuesday evening, area leaders gathered at the Pioneer PBS station in rural Granite Falls to hear a presentation given by Deb Brown, of Iowa. Brown is a co-founder of SaveYour.

Light snow in the forecast for Thanksgiving Day
If you thought parts of Minnesota picked up some nice snow last week, you were right. Much of central and west central Minnesota into parts of north central Minnesota received three to seven inches of snow. The snow was very light and fluffy.
Charges dismissed in trial involving Granite Falls physician
Last March, former physician with Avera’s Granite Falls clinic, Mark Eakes, made his first ap pearance in Yellow Medicine County Court on charges of 3rd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. Over the next months, additional charges were added, totaling nine in all in both the 3rd and 4th degree.
USDA reminds Lyon County farmers and ranchers to vote in committee election
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has started mailing ballots for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee elections to eligible farmers and ranchers across the country. To be counted, ballots must be returned to the Lyon County FSA

Another company looking to harness the wind in SW MN Renewable energy was on the tips of everyone’s tongue at Tuesday’s Lyon County Board meeting. The board heard a presentation from Purple Skies, a national wind energy company that is looking to construct a wind farm in the area, and also approved a Conditional Use Permit for Balaton Solar, LLC to install a solar power farm on the outskirts of Balaton.

A Life in Art on display featuring the work of Franz Albert Richter
Franz Albert Richter is a renowned local artist who has recently celebrated his 80th birthday. He is also the current artist on exhibit at the Madison Mercantile located in Madison, Minnesota as well as the recent subject of a documentary celebrating his life and art. According to Pioneer PBS, Richter “has long been considered one of the most influential artists and historians of the Upper Minnesota River Valley region. He grew up on a farm south of Clarkfield and after graduating from Clarkfield High school (Class of 1960) he moved to the Twin Cities to pursue further education. There he met and collaborated with the likes of Garrison Keillor, Robert Bly and Architect Dennis Grebner. After a stint as a Freedom Rider in the civil rights movement in the south and a visit to San Francisco for the “Summer of Love” in 1967, Richter returned to his home farm to pursue “a life in art.”

Veterans Day program at Lakeview
Last Friday, the annual Veterans Day Commemoration was held in the main gym of the Lakeview School. Host of the event was Prin cipal Hanson who gave the welcome and led the sing along with the National Anthem. The guest speaker was Master Sergeant (retired) Dan Houman who spoke about his military service and what he learned from it. The Lakeview Concert Choir sang "A Tribute to the Armed Services”, and the band performed “Within These Hal- lowed Walls".The Lakeview track team participated at the YME multi-school meet last Thursday.

Veterans Day program features WWII Navy Ace Donald M McPherson
Last Friday, a Veterans Day Program was held at the Fagen Fighters World War II Museum. YME Superintendent Rich Schneider gave the welcome, and the guest speaker was Donald M McPherson, World War II Navy Ace, the YME band and choir performed and the Advancement of the Colors was done by Boy Scout Troop #269, American Legion Post 204 (Echo), and Anderson-Bestland Post 127 (Hanley Falls). Taps was performed by Aiden Martin, and student essays were read by Kindal Meyer and Delaney Myers. After the program, a reception line was formed for guests to greet Veterans, and McPherson signed copies of his recently published book for sale in the museum’s gift shop.
