Schools start year with new training after Seizure Smart Schools legislation passes

Jessica Stölen-Jacobson Editor js tolen-j acobson@cherryroad.com This month, a walk was held in Marshall, hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota, both to raise awareness of the foundation’s efforts, as well as to celebrate the recently passed legislation regarding “Seizure Smart Schools”. Seizure Smart Schools is an effort that began nearly a dozen years ago.

New online tool shares Minnesota natural heritage data

Minnesota DNR A new online tool created by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources allows users to explore Natural Heritage Information System data for both conservation planning and identifying rare resources. The Natural Heritage Review process consists of identification of rare biological resources to determine and avoid potential impacts to those importance resources.

High pressure expected to return

As of last Thursday, portions of west central and central Minnesota were abnormally dry. Most of northern Minnesota was adequate at that point, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Then last Wednesday- Friday, more scattered rain pushed across the state. Some areas picked up some heavy rain during the period which helped to improve the drought conditions even further across Minnesota. Meanwhile, crops are looking pretty good for most of the state after severe weather hit the state back in May and delayed planting for many farmers. All-inall, most area farmers are in pretty good shape considering how things started off last spring.

ECHO Charter School Board approves contracts with pay raises

During its August 11 meeting, the Echo Charter School Board voted unanimously on pay raises for returning staff amounting to 6-9 percent (depending on years served) over their previous contracted salaries. The raises were based on a rubric approved at a special meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The discussion during the special meeting revolved around the decision to look to the future of the school and the fact that a good staff attracts new students, and ECHO Charter School could use more students to meet its budgetary needs. Board Chair and Special Education Teacher Nikki Schwartz stated that she is in support of the Plan A which offered a larger increase over Plan B which offered a flat 5 percent increase across the board.

Lyon County Fair local 4-H results

Submitted At the recent Lyon County Fair, local 4-Her’s from the Swan Lake Skippers Club took home a variety of ribbons. Those ribbon earners are listed below: Abigail Goblish: Blue Ribbons in Crafts and Fine Arts/Crafts, Photography/ Elements of Photography, Crafts and Fine Arts/Fine Arts, Horticulture/ Flower gardening.
