Julia Redner receives Departmental Honors at UMD
Julia Redner, daughter of Frank and Helen Redner of Echo, received her undergraduate degree in Studio Fine Art from the University of Minnesota Duluth in May. She was awarded the Department Honors Distinction Prize from the Fine Arts Department for her enduring creativity and prolific output of her arts as a recognition of her “academic achievement, service, and commitment to the discipline.” The prize is limited to very few undergraduate recipients each year. Redner also was named to the Dean’s List a total of seven times in her undergraduate career. She is teaching art at ECHO Charter School in the upcoming school year, then will pursue artist residency and graduate school. Redner is a member of the Upper Sioux Community.

“Dog Days” of summer have arrived
We have had some warm temperatures over the past week. The warm and humid air mass helped to fire off some showers and thunderstorms on Sunday morning and then again Sunday afternoon and evening. Some of these cells were on the strong to severe side across central Minnesota. They also produced some large hail.
Volunteer firefighter notices fire, rescues dog
At 10:45 AM on July 31, 2022 Granite Falls Fire and Rescue was paged for mutual aid with Clarkfield Fire Department to a working house fire. Clarkfield Ambulance, Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office, and Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the scene. A passerby volunteer firefighter noticed the fire, reported it, arrived, and rescued a family dog from the residence.
Concern about Summit Carbon Solution’s proposed CO2 pipeline brings landowners together
CURE (Clean Up the River Environment) Concern over a proposed CO2 pipeline in southwest Minnesota and the conduct of pipeline company, Summit Carbon Solutions, spurred nearly 60 landowners and community members from Redwood and Cottonwood Counties to meet on the evening of Friday, July 15th. In Minnesota, sections of Summit’s proposed high-pressure CO2 pipeline network will cut through Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Martin, Redwood, Renville, and Yellow Medicine Counties and a northern leg crosses Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties.

J.J. Luepke produces 7th novella
The wait for the third in the Reunion series is over! With the launch of “MISSING” on Friday, local author J.J. Luepke completes the second of two trilogies in dramatic fiction.
Annual Wood Lake Fair returns August 22nd-24th
The annual Wood Lake Community Club’s Wood Lake Fair returns beginning Monday, August 22nd. Events begin at 4 p.m. with the start of the Scavenger Hunt. Those wishing to participate can pick up bags and the rules at the Hamburger Stand downtown, and have until noon on Wednesday to find the hidden items. Bags should be turned in at the Hamburger Stand at that time. Monday is also entry day for the Exhibit Hall at the Community Center, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those times are also open for those participating in the Coloring Contest to drop off their completed work at the Community Center. Coloring pages can be picked up at the Wood Lake City Office during regular business hours in advance of the fair.

County board hears budget increase request from LCHS
The Lyon County Historical Society presented a request to the Lyon County Board of Commissioners at its July 19 county board meeting for more money for its executive director. Lyon County Historical Society acting President Bill Palmer said research of nine other counties’ historical societies with populations ranging from 8,000-47,000, showed the executive director position in Lyon County is grossly underpaid.

Echo Fire Department hosts annual Pork Chop Feed

Annual V-Esta Day event held
Root beer floats and cotton candy were sold at the V-Esta Chicken dinner in Vesta last Wednesday. Lions members were assisted by Vesta Viking 4-H members.
