Thank You
The family of Colleen Hoekstra would like to express our deepest gratitude to all who came out to give us such a meaningful show of support. The hugs, handshakes, visits, phone calls, and texts we received were so appreciated. We loved hearing all the memories and stories that were shared about Colleen. Thank you to those who sent cards, memorials, flowers & plants, and food – we couldn’t have made it through this sad time without your support. Thank you to Father Labat for the meaningful service, the praise-worship group from Clara City for the beautiful music, and to the St. Mary’s funeral committee for the luncheon. We are grateful to Colleen’s co-workers at Avera Marshall for all their support and kindness shown. An Avera Marshall Colleen Hoekstra scholarship fund has been set up in her honor to be used to by employees to further their nursing education. Memorials received from the funeral have been donated to this fund.

Area business provides services in multiple counties for removal of unwanted items and more
In June of 2020, David Giese opened Trash B Gone LLC, operating out of the Benson area but serving up to a 60-mile radius, sometimes further. Giese says he was inspired to start the business after having some family members pass away in 2012. “My stepdad and stepbrother passed away in Washington and I had to go out and help my mom go through a bunch of stuff, and it started me thinking. And then when my wife’s brother passed away, we had to clean out his apartment, and I thought about it again,” says Giese. When his mother passed away, finding himself back in Washington sorting through her home, he decided it was time to turn the ideas into a business. “I thought somebody could combine not only estate work, but individual residences, people getting things out of their home that maybe they don’t have the means to move, I could put myself to work,” he says.

Lakeview 5th graders create, learn to play dulcimers
Since 2014, the fifth-grade students at Lakeview School have created dulcimers each year. The project came about after the teachers, Stephanie Lundberg and Cory Hendrickson were awarded a grant through the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. This year, Ross Sutter, a singer, and musician from Minneapolis, spent over a week in the school, teaching students about the dulcimer. A dulcimer is a stringed instrument, built typically with three to four strings. Sutter has 30 years of experience working in schools across the Midwest. “Our students were fascinated that they could learn how to build an instrument and play it in a couple of days,” says teacher Stephanie Lundberg.
