Upper Sioux Community and State of Minnesota mark the return of sacred land
This morning, tribal and state officials gathered to enact the official transfer of the state-owned land that was within the boundaries of Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community (Pezihutazizi Oyate).“After years of work, I’m grateful to mark the official return of this land to the Yellow Medicine Dakota People,” said Governor Walz.

Veterans exposed to toxins and other hazards during military service now eligible for VA health care
Starting March 5th, Veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards while serving in the military – at home or abroad – are now eligible to enroll directly in VA health care.This means that Veterans who served in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Global War on Terror, or any other combat zone after 9/11 are eligible to enroll in VA health care without first applying for VA disability compensation benefits.Additionally, Veterans who never deployed but were exposed to toxins or hazards while training or on active duty in the United States are eligible to enroll.This expansion also covers many Veterans who never deployed as a part of a conflict but were exposed to toxins or hazards while serving in the U.S.Specifically, any Veteran who participated in a toxic exposure risk activity (TERA) – at home or abroad – is eligible for VA health care.
Landowner enrollment begins for Walk-In Access program
Enrollment is open for Minnesota’s 2024 Walk-In Access program, which pays landowners to allow public hunting on private lands.Since 2011, the Walk-In Access program has enrolled parcels of 40 acres or larger with high-quality natural cover.
Red Flag issued for extreme fire risk multiple times over the last week
Nearly every day last week, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for several counties in southwest Minnesota due to extreme fire risk conditions.Affected counties include Cottonwood, Jackson, Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, and Rock.A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including very dry conditions, low relative humidity, and strong wind.
