Ask a Trooper

Question: Can someone please tell dealers or inform people that their auto lights do not work during daylight hours? Or put it on those digital signs along the interstates? I did not know this when I bought my 05 vibe and someone told me that. So when we had these storms and fog, there are people driving without lights at all or no tail lights and when it is a white or silver vehicle makes it worse.

New Year, New You?

I am not a winter en- thusiast; to be precise, my favorite winter sport is going back inside where it is warm and comfort- able. Having said that, as I traveled about last week, I was struck by the beauty of the hoarfrost trees. They are the same tree we see all year long but somehow covered in this beautiful flocking; they look magical. See - ing these beautiful trees made me think about New Year's resolutions. We just finished the hustle and bustle of the holidays with the crazy weather that came with it this year. Just as we recover and dig out, the New Year stares us in the face begging us to make significant life-changing resolutions. So many of us take up the challenge and make a "resolution" of big changes in behav -

From the Editor’s Desk

Last week, I decided to take on redesigning my bedroom, as it’s the one room in the house I haven’t touched since initially decorating it when we moved in seven years ago. Around that same time, my grandmother had given me a box of keepsakes my grandfather had saved from his youth. At the time, it was still too sad for me to look through it and so I put it in a storage bench.

Memory Care Corner:

After having the grandchildren here for a couple days to celebrate Christmas, I noticed a word that seemed to work itself into many of the conversations – the word, No! Realizing that many of my decorations are not “kid-friendly” the parents of our three soon to be two year old grandsons were saying things like: “No, just look at the manger scene” or “No, do not take the orna- ments ou the Christmas tree.” Even our four year old granddaughter Charlotte needed to be reminded, “No, Charlotte, we cannot open presents just yet!” After doing some research, I learned that the average toddler hears the word ‘no’ an astonishing 400 times per day! At first I felt that 400 times seemed to be an exaggeration. However, just stop and think about how often we say things like: “no running, no throwing, no hitting, no jumping on the furniture, etc.” We are constantly telling our children how NOT to act – instead of telling them positive things like: “walk please, put it down gently, be gentle with your hands, or sit on the couch please.” Even though it is good for children to learn the word ‘no’ and what it means, I feel that we use the word ‘no’ more often than looking for or saying a positive statement.

Chance of snow in the forecast

I hope everyone enjoyed the mild temperatures over the weekend. We had plenty of low to mid 30s across much of the state, while southern Minnesota saw some upper 30s and lower 40s! These temperatures were 15 to 20 degrees warmer than average for this time of the year.
