My sister and I have a joke about how every time I travel, I have encounters with birds. Each of my digital travel albums includes a video in which some bird - usually a very large bird - is following me, (in quite close proximity) while I engage said bird in conversation. In Salem it was a seagull, at Imperial Beach it was a seagull, in Colorado it was a raven, in New York City it was my nosy hotel pigeon, and so on.

Sometimes people ask me how I stay ahead of the news. Well, I have many trusted sources but I’ve been reading one publication in particular for longer than all the others. The periodical both informs and entertains. Its prose is simple and clear, but not without style. Their news stories cut to the chase. There is a focus on the natural world. And their puzzles keep me razor sharp. That’s why I still read Highlights magazine.

Welcome to the first week of the new look of the Tri-County News! As I’ve been noting in our newspapers for the last couple of months, this week readers will officially be able to see the first of the changes to come under CherryRoad Media’s ownership. Last week, I wrote about how this week was going to have a whole new look. If you read that, and saw the front page this week, you're probably thinking "what the heck?" (I said heck, yes, because we're probably mostly Minnesotan here). Well, shortly after last week's paper went to print, it was announced that we would be working with the former company's systems for just one more week. Thus, no new look just yet.

Last week and this week so far has been all about meetings for our staff in which we learned how to use the new software systems we will be using as of March 1st to create our newspapers, and worked through all of our redesign processes in anticipation of fully transitioning our newspapers to Cherry- Road Media. Between the meetings and an unexpected death in my family that took me out of state over the weekend for a funeral, it was a week filled with less than my average time to collect news. A challenge, for sure, when filling three newspapers.
